How does WeTransfer work
WeTransfer, explained as a booth with a policy, not as a miracle.

There is no trick. You upload a file. You get a link. You send the link the way you already talk to the person. Everything people argue about is policy.
What WeTransfer decided
WeTransfer taught a whole generation that a file could be a link. You drop it in the browser, you get a URL, the other person does not make an account.
The mechanism is fine. The product is the afterwards.
Their own pages, as of late 2026, put the free plan at 3 GB per transfer, with 10 transfers or 3 GB total in a rolling month, and links that die after 3 days. Free use is framed as personal, not commercial.
The paid ladder is where the commercials go. Starter raises volume and still counts transfers. Ultimate is the one they describe as lifting the size ceiling, with branding and a longer life on the link.
The policy, not the magic
| WeTransfer | |
|---|---|
| Free size | 3 GB |
| Free expiry | 3 days |
| Account to send | They push for one |
| Password | Paid |
| The top end | Ultimate lifts the cap |
Why you would like it, and why you might not
It is still the name people say when they mean “just send the file.” The page is calm. Recipients are not puzzled.
Three days is a rude expiry if your client is on a shoot. Three gigabytes is a short film, not a project. And the free plan is not really for invoices you send every Tuesday.
If you dislike the policy, a smoother upload will not save you. The mechanism has been fine for years. The product is the afterwards.
