SFTP vs FTPS
Two ways to stop using naked FTP. Different bones.

SFTP is a distinct protocol on top of SSH. FTPS is classic FTP wearing TLS. Both encrypt. They do not speak to each other.
The distinction that matters
Pick SFTP unless a partner’s ancient system says FTPS in a contract. Then do what the contract says, grumbling is allowed, and still don’t make your clients learn either word.

In one table
| SFTP | FTPS | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | File transfer over SSH | Classic FTP plus TLS |
| They interoperate | No | No |
| Firewalls | Usually fine | Historically fussy |
| Default choice | Yes, unless a contract says otherwise | When the contract says FTPS |
